Founded in 1984, TED believes that good ideas can change the world and recognises the innovative ideas derived from daily lives. TEDx is created by TED (www.ted.com, Technology, Entertainment, Design) and it provides a stage for people who want to voice their opinions and experiences. TED hopes to “sow the seeds of sharing” by presenting impactful and influential speeches and lectures. TEDx’s speeches last no more than 18 minutes and have clear themes, and the latest and most imaginative invention or idea. On March 26th, 2016, SMIC Private School had successfully hosted TEDxSMICSchool in the MHS first floor auditorium. The theme, which seven speakers carried out through their speeches, was “Heart of the World.”
Originally, this event was an assignment which required high school students in Chinese elective courses to use advertising and sponsorship to help other people. However, Wesley Ding (ET10) planned something more ambitious than that. He wanted to use TEDx’s influence to help other people in the world. Therefore, under his leadership, a team of TEDxSMICSchool began to organize the event. The team managed everything from registering our school, finding sponsors, inviting speakers, designing posters, and other many other details to organize this event.
Through the school’s newsletter, all parents heard about TEDxSMICSchool and 100 tickets were sold out in 20 minutes. Everyone was hoping to visit TEDxSMICSchool to listen to the well-prepared speeches. That afternoon, there were many students who volunteered to help organize the event, including taking care of the reception area and taking photos for the event. With passion and responsibility, they worked hard and paid attention to every single detail. As the audience entered the auditorium after scanning the QR code of their electronic tickets and wearing the assigned name card, they heard the melodious piano performance by Brisson Lam(ET12), and everything was all set to begin.
