THE CURRICULUM INTEGRATION CENTER CHINESE DEPARTMENT …

offers two curriculum systems to tailor students’ needs of different language backgrounds. We have CSL (Chinese as a Second language) curriculum for non-native Chinese speakers and CLA (Chinese Language Arts) curriculum for native Chinese speakers.

CSL curriculum follows the ACTFL standard to help students build essential Chinese communication skills and develop communication skills to meet the basic needs of daily life. Eventually, students will be able to use Chinese in various circumstances. It is designed in thematic units, and the courses adopt multiple resources and materials to provide students with a differentiated learning environment and maximize student language skills.

The CLA curriculum, based upon the Compulsory Education Chinese Curriculum Standard 2022, offers a comprehensive, intriguing, and practical language education by integrating language, literary, cultural, and historical knowledge. Using a variety of exuberant teaching activities, the features of the CLA curriculum are systematically established in SMIC-I to stimulate students’ intrinsic motivation to learn Chinese, cultivate students to become global citizens, empower them to use Chinese authentically, and present their unique views on life and values. In addition to Regular CLA classes, G1-G3 Concentrated Chinese Courses and G4-G5 Accelerated Chinese Courses proceed at a brisk pace with more units and more advanced critical standards.
